Staying in a hotel in Antwerpen is probably one of the best things I ever did in my life, city trip wise I mean. The city of Antwerp is the single most vibrant and sparkling cities in Belgium, and by far the most beautiful I visited in the last 3 or 4 years. The eye-catcher of the 'Grote Markt' (town square) is, of course, the Town Hall of Antwerp. It is one of the oldest Renaissance buildings in the Low Countries. It was finished in 1564 by architect Cornelis Floris de Vriendt. In what follows, I'll tell you a little bit more about the history of the Town Hall, during my stay in a Antwerp hotel I read about 5 books about it, really fascinating!

When I was still a kid, I wanted to become an architect and build stuff like the historical buildings in Antwerp. The city had made plans at the beginning of the 16th century to build a new town hall in Gothic style, much like the town halls of Leuven, Brussels and Oudenaarde. However, the Antwerpians had to use the construction material for their new town hall to defend themselves against attacks from the Army of Maarten van Rossem from Gelre. It was only twenty years later that the financial position of the city had improved to such an extent that the plan for a new building for the mayor was unshelved. But, by this time fashion had changed. The Gothic style was out and Renaissance style had become the new fashion.

Luckily the hotel Antwerpen where I was staying was only a stone's throw away from the Grand Market. The present town hall of 1564 shows that it has been built by a city at the height of its power and wealth. The style of the building is obviously Renaissance (the superposition of Dorian and Ionic colons), but the middle section still clearly resembles the towers of the many Gothic Flemish and Brabantine town halls. The 45 doors in the ground floor were built to house little shops. The rent that the shop-keepers had to pay was used to help finance the construction of the prestigious building. You can find many more information about this in the flyers or folders at the reception of your Antwerp hotels.

Since 1993 Antwerp celebrates ‘The Summer of Antwerp’, a cultural festival with a programme of events that span music, art, theatre and film at various places in the city. This year Antwerp is also on Lonely Planet’s prestigious list of the world’s ten most interesting cities! So what are you waiting for? Take a look at the many high quality hotels Antwerpen now and decide when you will leave! No doubt you will enjoy your stay in your hotels in Antwerpen!

I'm sitting behind my laptop in my luxurious room in my hotel in Brussel. This is the fifth and final country on my European excursion. I began in England, took the train to nearby Wales and then flew to Germany. Last week, I was in Cologne and from there, drove to Brussels via the Netherlands. Driving through these European countries is similar to driving through the northeastern United States. The distance between the eastern seaboard states is the same as that between these countries. But the big difference in Europe is that once you've crossed a border (there are no barriers), everything changes, from the language to the food. It's mind-boggling and a complete joy to experience. You'll experience it all for yourself by reading this week's story, checking out the photos and viewing our two-minute video as well. Brussels is a wonderful and charming destination, but don't just take my word for it! I was lucky to be able to stay in a very beautiful Brussels hotel, located in the city centre, where all the best hotels in Brussel are. Perhaps you'll stay in a far less pleasant one, so don't come complain afterwards.

It's a rainy day today but inspite of the bad weather, I get the impression that half Japan, half Germany, half Britain and half Italy are looking at the beautiful flower carpet and are amazed about such beauty, I can spy on them from my window in my hotel Brussels, hihi! Probably it is good for me that the weather is bad, otherwise I don't know how I could take photos there were so many people ! I think this year the flowers are petunias, as each time another flower is selected. Three turning stars are placed in the middle, very beautiful.

The Grand' Place is possibly one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and the jewel in Brussels' crown and I'm so glad my hotel in Brussel is so close to it! The Grand-Place is Brussels' top tourist attraction justified by the Gothic magnificence of the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) and the Baroque exuberance of the late seventeenth-century guildhouses surrounding the square. I would really like to stay a little longer in this hotel Brussel but I'm afraid I'm already leaving tomorrow...

Bruges, a city worth ten visits.

A visit to Bruges will be memorable and certainly be one of the best citytrips you will ever have. This city will always be attractive to spend some nights.

To visit Bruges is to return in time. This city was born during the middle ages due to its connection to the sea. The famous "Zwin" can still be visited in Knokke. ( now a bird reserve ). During the ages the "Zwin" became less and less accessible untill a point where furhter travel was simply impossible, what in other means ment the decay of this world trade center during the middle ages. Everything in this city still reminds to this beautiful time in history. Some places in Bruges are absolutely must do's when you're walking through this beautiful city. Here you find some of the places to visit during your stay in Bruges.

Put your climbing shoes on and visit the mediaval belfry. It is quite a climb but the view from the upper belltower is magnificent and really makes it worth the climb

200m away from the belfry you find the Basilic of the Holy Blood, where a relic of Christ's blood is held. This old roman church is the oldest church in Bruges and most beautiful.

A boat tour along the medieval canals shows you Bruges in a whole different light and let yourself be enchanted by times past.

Horse and carriage are still 'in' in Bruges, it is really a relaxing way of exploring Bruges.

Reachability:

Bruges lies in the flemish part of Belgium, on about 80km from our European Capital, Brussels, Antwerp is some 75km away, the closest big city is Ghent, only half an hour drive.

Many tourist choose a hotel in Brussels as base to visit Belgium, which is a tactical error. Hotels in Brussels can not tip at the charming environment of the different family hotels in Bruges. Hotels in Antwerp are absolutely out of the question because Antwerp has nothing to offer in comparison to Brussels or Bruges. If all hotels in Bruges are full, i would recommend if you like to sleep quietly to look for a hotel in Oostende or a hotel in Knokke-Heist, at the coast because this is far closer to Bruges than other cities and your staying at the seaside.

The hugh choice of hotels in Bruges makes a swift choice of a hotel to your liking difficult. Bruges offers everything from small familyhotels till big luxurious hotels in Bruges with all possible comfort . We have selected a few of the hotels in Bruges where you could stay during your visit of Bruges. They offer the best price/quality accomodation in Bruges . Most hotels in Bruges can be booked online which makes it very easy to find a good hotel.

Dinner in Bruges:

If you would like to dine exclusively there is one address I would recommend as we have had a terrific dinner over there and that is restaurant Aneth. just a 10 min walk from the main square but definitely worth it. There are numerous restaurants in Bruges so a choice for a nice dinner is not that easy. Here are few examples of good and nice places to eat.

Restaurant Arthies

Restaurant Guillaume

Restaurant Curiosa

Visit closeby Bruges:

From your hotel in Bruges you can easily visit the coastal region of Belgium with cities like Ostend and Knokke-Heist. The Belgian coast can be a beautiful intermezzo of your visits to the musea. A bikeride of 1h-1.30h will take you easily to the coast along beautiful canals and the 'Polders'.

If you choose to stay in Bruges it can be very interesting to take the train for one day to Brussels and perhaps 1 day to Antwerp.
Both cities are reached in about 1h travel time which makes it quite doable.

Have fun in Bruges and don't buy to many touristic presents.
